SLB says it expects to restart up to 15 idle oil rigs in Venezuela within a year, pointing to more crude coming back to the market.

What happened

An SLB executive said the company plans to reactivate as many as 15 oil rigs that are already sitting idle inside Venezuela, and to do it in less than a year. That would lift Venezuelan crude output, which has been depressed for years. The move touched roughly 500 billion dollars in market value across affected stocks.

Why it matters

More barrels from Venezuela means more supply on the global oil market. When supply rises faster than demand, the price of oil tends to fall, which squeezes the profits of every oil producer and complicates OPEC+ efforts to hold prices up by limiting their own output. Cheaper oil helps consumers and companies that burn fuel, and it pressures the drillers and service firms whose revenue tracks crude prices.

The case against

Reactivating idle rigs is one thing; getting oil flowing and sold is another. Venezuela has faced sanctions, aging fields, and financing problems for years, so 'up to 15' and 'less than a year' may prove optimistic. Even if it happens, the added volume may be small next to daily global demand and OPEC+ spare capacity.

What settles it

Whether the rigs actually come online on that timeline and how many barrels per day Venezuela adds to reported output over the next year.
