Nvidia is in talks to invest in or buy AI startup Reflection AI, extending a dealmaking spree across the chip sector.
What happened
Nvidia is negotiating an investment or outright acquisition of open-source startup Reflection AI. The talks are part of a broader surge in AI-related dealmaking, with Salesforce announcing its purchase of AI startup Loops, sending CRM stock up 2.3 percent. Instacart also moved sharply, gaining 4.3 percent, a larger move than 89 percent of its trading days over three years.
Why it matters
This is a race to lock up scarce AI resources when demand for training and inference capacity is still outstripping the supply of accelerators and memory. By buying a startup, Nvidia not only grabs talent and technology but also removes a future partner or competitor from the board. For smaller chip and AI firms, each deal re-rates what the remaining independent players might be worth.
The case against
Nvidia's AI compute revenue is dangerously concentrated in four hyperscaler customers, and those same customers are developing their own competing chips. Acquiring a startup may signal that Nvidia sees its current moat narrowing and needs outside tech to fend off the in-house chips coming from its biggest buyers.
Our read
We believe that through 2030 demand for frontier compute exceeds supply, so owners of scarce capacity set the price. This deal would add another scarce asset under Nvidia's control, reinforcing that position.
What settles it
Whether Nvidia reports the deal as an acquisition or a minority investment will show how badly it wants to keep Reflection's technology off the open market.
