Nvidia reportedly received $35 billion in orders from Alibaba, ByteDance, and Tencent for its RTX PRO 5500 chips amid fresh US export curbs.
What happened
Chinese tech giants Alibaba, ByteDance, and Tencent collectively ordered $35 billion worth of Nvidia's RTX PRO 5500 chips, according to reports. The orders landed just as the US government announced new restrictions on advanced chip exports. Nvidia shares moved 1.8 percent, a larger move than it makes on 53 percent of trading days over three years.
Why it matters
The scale of the order shows Chinese firms scrambling to secure advanced silicon before export controls close the door. That buying rush supports near-term revenue but deepens Nvidia's reliance on a narrow, geopolitically fraught customer base. The trade tensions can also speed up domestic chip production efforts outside China.
The case against
The reported orders may never ship if tightening rules block them, turning a headline into a write-off. Nvidia's AI compute revenue is already dangerously concentrated in four hyperscaler customers who are all designing their own competing chips.
What settles it
Whether the US Commerce Department explicitly licenses or blocks the RTX PRO 5500 shipments to those three Chinese firms.
