Hall Chadwick Acquisition Corp agreed to combine with rare earth recycler REEcycle Holdings, moving roughly half a trillion dollars in market value.
What happened
The SPAC announced a definitive business combination with REEcycle Holdings. The deal moved an estimated 500 billion dollars of market value, while gold miner HMY fell 3.7 percent, a move larger than 74 percent of its daily moves over three years.
Why it matters
SPAC mergers typically lift the target and pressure the acquirer as the market reassesses the economics. A rare earth recycling tie-up lands while bond stress is building: high-yield bonds are underperforming investment-grade by 0.7 percent and volatility spiked 7.9 percent, making funding more expensive. That can compress deal premiums or encourage re-ratings of peers in the space.
The case against
SPAC deals carry known risk, including regulatory scrutiny and a poor record of post-merger performance. The market's risk-off turn and falling yields suggest capital is already getting more selective about speculative vehicles.
What settles it
Whether the combined company's valuation holds once the initial SPAC pop fades and lock-up periods expire.
