Amazon and Fortinet shares fell after hours as both missed revenue and earnings expectations.
What happened
Amazon missed Wall Street's revenue and earnings targets. Fortinet's third quarter services revenue missed the mark. The moves wiped roughly 100 billion dollars of market value from each name, with Fortinet dropping more than 5 percent in the regular session, a daily move bigger than 97 percent of its trading days over three years.
Why it matters
When two very different tech firms disappoint on revenue and earnings at the same time, it raises a question about overall demand. The scale of the market value lost, roughly 100 billion dollars per name, shows investors were priced for execution that did not arrive, and the shock can ripple across sector peers who face the same spending environment.
The case against
Both misses can be one off company issues. Amazon's logistics costs may have run hot, and Fortinet's services miss could be its own sales execution, not a sign that businesses everywhere are cutting cloud or security budgets.
What settles it
Whether other large cloud infrastructure and cybersecurity providers lower their own guidance in the coming weeks.
