Samsung is putting a stablecoin wallet onto 82 million Galaxy devices through a partnership with crypto payments firm Alchemy Pay.
What happened
Samsung's latest phone update includes a crypto wallet able to hold stablecoins, settling payments using those dollar-pegged tokens. The feature reaches roughly 82 million existing Galaxy devices globally through the Alchemy Pay integration. The broader crypto market felt an opposing force as bitcoin slid after a hotter than expected consumer price inflation print.
Why it matters
A wallet with stablecoin rails on a mass market device turns a loyalty app into a payment network that can settle instantly with fewer middlemen. For users, it cuts the friction of moving money between crypto and fiat. For Samsung, it keeps people inside its ecosystem for financial activity instead of ceding that ground to Apple or standalone apps.
The case against
Putting a crypto wallet on a phone does not mean people will use it. Past corporate attempts to build mobile payment ecosystems have stalled because consumers see little reason to switch from existing cards and apps. The hot inflation data also reminded markets that macro headwinds can overpower adoption stories.
What settles it
Transaction volumes flowing through the wallet in the first full quarter after launch, which will show whether the feature changes behavior or just takes up storage space.
